mcdavidphoto2.jpgVirginia “Ginny” Stogner McDavid grew up in Lubbock, TX and has roots tracing back to the Chickasaw Nation in Love County, OK. McDavid has resided in Houston for over 21 years since graduating from Texas Tech University in 1986. McDavid was an Auditor for the Accounting firm Ernst & Whinney (currently Ernst & Young), and she has been a CPA since 1988. In 1990 she also became a Flight Attendant for a major international carrier. She has flown domestic, international, and as a Spanish-speaking Interpreter flying to Latin America and Spain. In 1993, McDavid was awarded the Civilian Desert Shield & Desert Storm Medal by the U.S. Air Force for her service flying charter operations to and from the Middle East during the first Gulf War.

ginnywomancpa.jpgVirginia’s accounting career has included both public and private industry experience, and for over 7 years she managed her own accounting and financial planning business. As a Flight Attendant active in her union, McDavid has served as Trustee, Recording Secretary, and Vice-President of International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers’ (IAMAW) Local Lodge 2339, the union representing over 9,500 flight attendants at Continental Airlines. She also serves as Air Transport District Lodge 142’s Co-Chair of their Legislative/Political Action Committee. Other union positions she has held include Delegate to the Harris County AFL-CIO Central Labor Council and National Executive Board Member of the Coalition of Labor Union Women (CLUW). Having had an occupational injury, McDavid holds a special sensitivity towards working people and the need for strong health & safety laws.

 

 

 

 

 

ginny-mark-5496.jpgMcDavid has been very involved in the community. Virginia and her husband belong to St. Philip Presbyterian Church. She has served on the Board of the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees) and belongs to the League of Women Voters and Oak Forest Homeowners’ Association. She is a member of Leadership Houston’s Class XXVI and is a former President of the Texas Women’s Political Caucus. Other political activities have included former SDEC Committeewoman to the Texas Democratic Party and National Delegate to the Democratic National Convention in both 1996 and 2004.

 


McDavid’s mother, Linda Shivers Stogner, is a retired public school teacher and her father, Charles Stogner, is a retired state employee. Her stepmother, Maria “Maru” Alessio Stogner, grew up in Monterrey, Mexico and teaches bilingual education in Spring Branch ISD. Public service runs in McDavid’s background: her late grandfather, Tom Shivers, was Chair of the Van Zandt ISD School Board in East Texas and her husband’s grandmother, Constance McDavid, was the first woman elected county-wide in Harris County in 1948 and served as Harris County Treasurer for over 25 years.
streetsafetykidsginny.jpgMcDavid is running for the Democratic Party nomination to take on Republican incumbent Dwayne Bohac in the November, 2008 General Election. McDavid’s goals after entering the Texas House include Safe Streets (getting smart and not just tough on crime), Sharp Minds (strengthening our public schools), Sound Bodies (improving access to health care and holding polluters accountable), and Fairness for Working Families (better oversight on escalating insurance and utility rates). She comes from an ordinary, Middle Class Texas household with a strong commitment to civic responsibility. Virginia and her husband, Mark McDavid, reside in the Oak Forest neighborhood of District 138.
