Cinco de Mayo represents an important date in Hispanic history as the hard-fighting Mexican army warded off the invasion of Napoleon III and his French troops into their country.  Although not a US holiday, it does represent an “old world,new world” clash typical in the American hemisphere where indigenous people and soldiers fought hard to stave off colonial rule and exercise self-sovereignty.  Their success certainly deserves a toast!
